Mercury Retrograde

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK

This piece explores the friction of celestial transitions through a dense, tactile landscape. Built with layers of moulding paste and collage, the surface acts as a physical record of erosion and interference. Deep, atmospheric shadows of charcoal and indigo are interrupted by frantic wax pastel scribbles and ‘skiffed’ highlights, mimicking the erratic energy of a planetary shift. Beneath the weathered, earthy ochres, vibrant flashes of cyan and neon green peek through, suggesting a hidden ‘inner light’ that survives the chaos of the retrograde. It is a study of texture as much as it is a study of mood: a small-format exploration of vast, cosmic static.

Topaz Sunset

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK

Topaz Sunset is an 11x14x1.5-inch exploration of light and atmosphere, rendered in acrylic on a deep-profile wood panel. Born out of a spirit of playful exploration, this piece draws its soul from the vibrant hues of the Benjamin Moore palette, centring on a personal interpretation of Topaz as the radiant focal point. The composition was a deliberate exercise in embracing colour diversity while adhering to a strictly limited palette. By layering the depth of Blue Nova and Cracked Pepper against the airy brilliance of White Dove and Pristine, the work captures a sense of shifting horizons. The sturdy wood substrate allowed for a tactile dialogue between the paint and the surface, where accents of Honeybee, Teacup Rose, Polar Sky, and Hazy Lilac emerged as unforeseen bursts of creativity. The resulting process was as enriching as it was enjoyable, transforming a structured palette into a fluid, emotive landscape.

Verdant Reach

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK

This original oil painting on a deep-profile wood cradle features a cluster of invented botanicals that bridge the gap between flora and architectural form. The plants, rendered in deep teals, sage, and muted forest greens, emerge from the bottom of the frame with slender, curving stalks. Their “blooms” or foliage heads are composed of thick, finger-like petals that feel reminiscent of both succulents and sea anemones. Atmosphere and Color: The background is a vibrant, textured exploration of warmth and light. Splashes of burnt orange, ochre, and pale gold create a sun-drenched atmosphere, providing a high-contrast backdrop that makes the cool-toned botanicals pop. Hints of cerulean blue peek through the background layers, suggesting a depth of sky or hidden water. Texture and Medium: The use of oil on wood allows for visible, confident brushwork and a rich tactile quality. The 1.5-inch wood cradle adds a physical weight and modern presence to the piece, allowing the artwork to stand out from the wall without the need for a frame.
